 RYOICHI KUROKAWA

Following the success of the sold-out Big in Japan programme at the last Optronica, featuring Takagi Masakatsu, we welcome for his first solo show in the UK, prominent Japanese multi-media artist and composer Ryoichi Kurokawa.

Like his contemporary Ryoji Ikeda, Kurokawa explores digital realms with an audiovisual language characterised by precision and a contrast between minimalism and complexity.  He composes time based sculpture with digitally generated materials and field-recorded sources, accepting sound and imagery as a single unit and not as separate entities.

He began creating video/sound installations and projections in 1999, and soon after began performing live visuals for acts such as Sketch Show (with ex-YMO artists Haruomi Hosono & Yukihiro Takahashi) and Human Audio Sponge - Sketch Show's collaborative project with Ryuichi Sakamoto - which was big hit at Sonar in 2004.

He then began performing his own live audiovisual projects, and following his notable collaboration with Sakamoto, Kurokawa found himself being invited to perform his cross-media concert at festivals worldwide, including at ARS Electronica and at Mutek.

Prior to Kurokawa's performance, Big in Japan will present a new screening programme of new Japanese work featuring the likes of Hideaki Motoki, Kloma, Enlightenment and many more.
