 RECHENZENTRUM

Headlining the Optronica Lab strand with the World premiere of their new project, German act Rechenzentrum use video as an instrument, simply treating music visually. In their own words, they "search for new processes in which audio and video are equally important. With each release we have moved closer to our ideal of a fused, symbiotic aural/visual product"

Inspired by the writings of Maupassant and Beckett, with influences ranging from Lettrisme and Dada, through to Burroughs, cut-up techniques and Punk, and combining methods like ink & pencil drawing, photography and custom-made software for video synthesis, this truly innovative Berlin-based act’s live cinematic concerts create a collage of sensually interlinked aural and visual information.

Breaking down, what they describe as, "borders of context", Rechenzentrum have played in museums, music festivals as well as night clubs and underground raves. They’ve had their work put out by labels including Kitty Yo, Mille Plateaux and Shitkatapult, and have released material in numerous formats, always pushing the possibilities and limitations of each, often involving collaborations with artists based in other medias and genres.

One initial reason for us to start working together was that it seemed no-one was releasing the kind of music we wanted to hear or the video we wanted to see, or combined them in innovative and appealing ways; so we set out to create it ourselves”.
