 SOUND & SILENTS

Birds Eye View presents 'Sound & Silents' - a special Sunday event with specially-written music by Joanna MacGregor (“the most energising force in contemporary music The Independent) performed live with DJ Rita Ray and multi-instrumentalist Shri Sriram to a varied selection of short silent films, from hilarious comedy by Alice Guy Blaché (the very first female director), to contemporary animation.

Joanna MacGregor is thought of as one of today's most wide-ranging and innovative musicians and divides her time playing classical, jazz and contemporary music.  She has performed in over fifty countries, often appearing as a solo artist with many of the world's leading orchestras. These have included the New York Philharmonic, London and Sydney Symphony Orchestras.

Founding DJ member of The Shrine club night and 1/4 of Andy Sheppard's radical Jazz quartet, Rita Ray plays clubs and festivals all over Europe and Africa. She is a regular presenter and contributor to radio and television.

Born in Bombay and raised as a classical tabla player, Shri Sriram turned tradition on its head by developing a more groove orientated playing style in his early teens. As time progressed, he adapted his innovative feel for percussion to other instruments, notably the bamboo flute and his self-made fretless bass.

Birds Eye View facilitate collaboration between women artists and organise events in the UK. Sound & Silents at Optronica is part of Birds Eye View Festival 2007.
