| Roderic Wilson aka Lightning Rod aka Bubble Vision! has been in the business
of illumination for over a decade or so creating and projecting visuals for bands as diverse as The Egg, Hal and Bobby Conn just to name but a few. He's one of those very recognisable figures you'll often find at summer festivals illuminating tents (both inside and out!) with his very own ingenious designs.
Kind of steering away from the digital domain, Lightning Rod frequently confines himself to the analogue side of things due
to what he sees as its "aesthetic superiority" and is famed for his glass liquid projection wheels of which he has now made over 100.
On his first ever project, he took a real piano keyboard and by wiring contacts underneath each key, one could literally play his lightshow which, very primitively , consisted of painted light bulbs attached to junk metal sculptures; very much like the early colour-organs of old.
At Optronica 2005, in the Lounge, he showed a very different approach to animation with his 35mm
slide animation system, which - mirroring the animation process - automatically replaced slides one after another in quick succession. This year, he is exhibiting THE LIGHTBOX which puts analogue and digital, in all their glory, side by side, reacting to music.
Future projects are currently a secret. |
